ISRAEL MUST DIVORCE WITH RELIGION

ISRAEL MUST DIVORCE WITH RELIGION

BY DIDIER BERTIN - 27 June 2009

Israel may determine his particular identity on History and starts to divorce with Religion, which have an adverse effect on such identity and on relations with other Democratic Countries.

I-Archaeological evidences, linguistic, History and traditions supporting  Israel  identity

The most ancient evidences: The kingdom of Israel is widely proven by many archaeological sources and in particular written steles as those of Mesha , Tel Dan Stele. The written existence of Stele as those of El Kera, the Calendar of Gezer, the stele of Lachish demonstrate the current utilisation of a proto-Hebrew or similar (Moabit) for the most ancient steles..

Later the archaeological evidences and the numerous monuments and objects demonstrate clearly the territorial presence of Israel people even after the destruction of the temple up to the contemporary period; on top this become part of History on the basis of  jewish and foreign written documents.

The History of the last twenty centuries and the cultural traditions are additional factors which reinforce also the national identity.

II- The misleading reference to Bible regarding Israel Identity

The Bible has been written from 1500 to 500 BCE approximately by of course many authors.

The target of theses authors was to record the oral tradition regarding events they mostly never witness. The authors had not in mind to create a book of History but a religious and spiritual Book without need of authenticity or rationality but a need of Harmony regarding a strong belief in God,  who does not belong to the field of rational.

For example it is probable that at the date indicated for the assumed Exodus, the 10 commandments may have been written since the proto-Hebrew did not exist or at least was not yet sufficiently developed at that time. The first steles written in proto-Hebrew or similar (Moabit) were found much later: El Kerak (920 BCE), Gezer Calendar (925 BCE) and Lachish Stele (588 BCE) and were then built in the 10th century BCE or after as compared to the 15th century BCE for the assumed exodus.

In addition, we have no evidences also that Moses, David or Salomon have really existed.

Nevertheless, regarding David we found very recently (1993) a significant stele in Tel Dan, which does not constitute either absolute evidence. These problems do not affect the religious sense of the Bible or its beauty or its meaning, whose target is not historic or scientific but “only religious.” It must be also noted that 10 commandments assumed to have been given during such Exodus, “did not aim to be universal” e.g. the prohibition of killing was authorized in certain cases like lapidating for certain faults and may be applied to all foreign enemies (e.g. anathema) as this was done during the conquest of Canaan country As a matter of facts, the neighbours to be respected are only the Bnei Israel but not the foreigners.

The assumed building a Temple(first) by Salomon,  then by the freed captives of Babylon (second) and renovated by Herod, is in contradiction with the intangibility of God whose presence is everywhere and may be viewed as a form of paganism as for the  Temples of Egypt, Greece or far East, with similar organisation such as the presence of big Priests, animal sacrifices, and offerings to God. Consequently some religious development may have affected adversely the strict religious Israel identity clearly determined on intangibility of God everywhere. Any materialization of God in any particular place may be considered as non-orthodox.

It must be also noted that the so critical Catholic Church decided to perpetuate the same mistake by building its Churches according to the Temple model and Liturgy on the basis of the Temple’s one and tend to materialize in many occasion the presence of God in certain places. In any case Church is separated from civil authority in most democratic countries.

III- CONCLUSION

Israel must as other democratic States have a secular national identity, which does not need any religious references and may start thus start his divorce from religion.
